A Web developer is a software developer or software engineer who is specifically engaged in the development of World Wide Web applications, or distributed network applications that are run over the HTTP protocol from a web server to a web browser.

Many Web developer's are also skilled in web design, information architecture, usability engineering, web content management systems, web server administration, and search engine optimization.

Due to the increasing complexity of web applications in recent years, web developers often specialize in either frontend or backend work. A frontend Web developer focus on the user interface and typically work with technologies such as ECMAscript and its variants (JavaScript, JScript, ActionScript), CSS , and the DOM .

A backend Web developer usually focus on the interaction between server-side frameworks and databases. Some backend Web developers maintain databases directly on their web servers, while in other situations the backend Web developer calls data, managed by a database administrator, on an external system.

A Web developer can also be a Web designer, but a Web developer typically has more database, CGI, and engineering experience. He or she develops the interface between the front and back end of a website.
